Beginning Readers
Children begin formal schooling between the ages of five and six in most Western countries. This is the age many people believe that children can begin to learn to read. There are some children who begin school already knowing how to read. This is usually because their parents have invested time and effort in teaching them how to read. The truth is that kids can learn to read at a younger age, it just takes more care and effort. While many children are ready to learn earlier, some are not. The age for starting school may have more to do with the child’s ability to function independently than a real readiness to learn.
If parents want their children to learn to read before they start school then they will need to find ways to teach them. While each child is different it is possible for kids younger than age six to learn to read. Teaching your own children is a special experience. It will require a lot of patience in addition to persistence and creativity. With some investment on both of your parts your child should have no problem learning how to read.
As early as age two kids are able to develop the cognitive and visual skills to indentify complex letters and shapes. There are some children who can begin to read words when they are three and others will be reading simple sentences by age four. While these children are ahead of their peers it is usually the result of parents who have taken the time to use strategies for kids to learn to read. Just about every child will know their alphabet and how to read simple words by age six. The speed with which they progress will depend in large part on the time and resources the parents are able to invest.
